Pond Animal Information 


 

Water Shrimp
Scientific Name: Gammarus species
Group:
Crustacea
Size: 2 - 20 mm

These live under stones or in pond mud. They swim about on their sides. They breathe through gills which are at the top of their legs. The females carry their eggs and young in an egg pouch.

 

 
Food chain
Position in food chain:
Secondary consumer (omnivore/scavenger)
They eat: detritus (dead plant and animal material)
They are eaten by:
larger animals such as water spiders, diving beetles, dragonfly nymphs, beetle larva

The males carry the females!

 

Life cycle
Water shrimps hatch from eggs into tiny shrimps which look just like the adults. There is no larval stage. 

Did you know ... In spring and summer when the females are carrying eggs in their egg pouch, they are themselves carried about by the males.
