Pond Animal Information 


 

Caddis fly larva
Scientific Name: Trichoptera 
Group: Insecta 
Size:  20 - 40 mm

These are masters of camouflage! The larva build tubes from leaves, twigs or stones to cover their soft body. Some animals have hooks at the tip of their abdomen to hold themselves inside the tube. Most larger types have gills have on  their abdomen.

Position in food chain:
primary consumer (herbivore)
They eat: plants 
They are eaten by:
larger animals such as water spiders, diving beetles, dragonfly nymphs

The adults are sometimes called 'sedge flies' by fishermen.

 

Life cycle
The female lay her eggs underwater on plants or stones. When they hatch, the larva build a 'home' which is added to as it grows.  

The larva pupates in its case in early summer. The pupa cuts its way out of the case and climbs out of the water before hatching into an adult caddis fly.

Did you know ...   Each type of caddis fly larva uses a different material to build their case.
